The MacBook Pro (15.4" widescreen) was Ap...

There’s a fantastic range of laptop computers available to buy online, with a variety of features to suit different needs and uses. Here are some useful hints and tips about things to consider when choosing a laptop.

How to Choose a Laptop

Laptop computers - also known as notebooks - offer the same features and specifications as desktop computers but in a portable form. A laptop’s portability makes it much more flexible to use than a desktop computer, and the long lasting, rechargeable batteries offer freedom and convenience.

A laptop computer consists of one unit, usually with a keyboard and hardware in one section, and a screen section connected to it, so the laptop can be opened and closed in a ‘clam style’ fashion. Most laptops will fit into specially designed bags and cases for added protection when you’re on the move.

One of the first things to do before you start looking for a laptop computer is to decide what you want to do with it. Will you need it for studying, running a small business, for entertainment, or a combination of activities?

Features to Look for When You Buy a Laptop

It’s important to remember that a laptop’s uses will be largely governed by its specifications. Those specifications differ widely between the models of laptop computer available to buy online or in the shops.

Here are the features and specifications that will make a difference on your laptop:

* Operating system: This is the basic software that makes use of the laptop’s processing system. There are two main types of operating system - Windows, from Microsoft, and OS X, from Apple Macintosh. Both systems perform well and run most common software applications, including Microsoft Office, media players and internet browsers. Windows is the largest selling operating system in the world, but while most laptops come with Windows, OS X is popular for its graphics and publishing capabilities.
* Processor: Processors are composed of chips that drive and control the laptop’s functions. Intel and AMD manufacture the main types of processor. Your laptop will usually come with a powerful processor, though it’s worth comparing the different types.
* RAM: This is Random Access Memory, which is used to run software. Most laptops will come with at least 512 - 1024 megabytes of RAM, which is adequate for most users. Consider buying more memory if you want to run several large software programs at the same time.
* Hard disc drive: This is where all your files, software applications and other data are stored. While desktop computers usually have larger hard drives, most laptop hard drives are up to 80 gigabytes in size. If you are planning to store large amounts of music, video or other data on your laptop, consider buying extra hard drive storage space
* Optical drive: This is usually a combined CD and DVD drive, and is used for both playing and recording onto CD and DVD, though some laptops will be cheaper if the DVD option only plays. If you are planning on recording movies or storing large amounts of data then consider a DVD recorder drive.
* Wi-Fi: Wireless Fidelity enables your laptop to connect to the internet without using wires. Wi-Fi ‘hot spots’ exist in many towns, so you can access the internet while you’re on the move. You can buy wireless routers for your house too, so you can move around with your laptop and still remain online.
* Ports: For printing, music amplification, and connecting to other devices, laptops use ports as well as wireless connections. USB ports are the most versatile, so the more of these the better. Firewire ports are ideal for camcorders, and Ethernet ports are great for high-speed internet access.
* Battery: The battery life between charges determines how much usage you can get from your laptop while away from mains power. Battery life is usually up to about 10 hours, but it does vary between laptop models and depends on whether you run powerful software applications.
* Screen: Screen display sizes on laptops vary from 10 inches to over 17 inches. Usually the bigger the display, the more you will pay for your laptop.
* Accessories: Laptops can come with a range of accessories, or they may be available to buy separately. Accessories include: carry bags and cases - essential for protecting the laptop when on the move; speakers - to improve sound amplification; and web cams - unless your laptop has a built-in web cam, you will need to buy one if you want to use your laptop for video conferencing.

Do I Need to Buy an Extended Laptop Warranty?

Once you’ve decided on the specifications you require, try to keep within a set budget, and don’t be distracted by features and specifications that you don’t need.

Look out for laptops that include the types of software that will suit your needs. Apple Macintosh computers such as the latest Apple MacBook come with a range of useful software already installed, but can be more expensive than Windows laptops.

Before choosing your laptop, find out what type of warranty is offered with it. A warranty will cover the cost of repairs or replacements under certain conditions for at least a year. Sometimes it’s worth paying extra for an extended warranty, especially if you are buying a more expensive laptop.

Online retailers hold regular sales and discounts and offer reconditioned laptop bargains, so by taking advantage of these offers and comparing laptop prices between different retailers, you might end up with a better model of laptop for your money.

Savebuckets price comparison site has searched hundreds of online shops and allows you to check different laptop models and compare prices.

Asus offers two different kinds of hard drives for you to choose from in their netbooks. Here is some Asus netbook info on the difference between solid state drives and hard disk drives.

Neither is necessarily better than another. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks.

Solid State Drives

A compact flash card is one example of such a drive. MP3 players and iPods use solid state drives. Why? Because they have no moving parts that could damage the data on the drive. These drives are really great for netbooks especially for those students or road warriors that use their Asus netbooks out in the field in varying conditions. If you are on the bus, you don’t have to worry about getting bumped since your data will be safe. No moving parts means that a bump has no opportunity to do any damage.

For any netbook user, battery life seems to be an issue that just won’t go away. Indeed, while netbooks may be ultra portable, their batteries can only extend up to a certain number of hours: 3 hours with a 3-cell battery and proportionally higher with a 6-cell battery and 9-cell battery. Here are some ways to extend your battery life.

Here are some ways to extend your battery life.

1. Demand less from your hard drive.

One of the ways you can do this is to defrag regularly. By defragmenting, your hard drive performs better because it repairs the bad sectors in your hard drive. But of course, you do not defrag your netbook while it’s on battery mode.

2. Dim your netbook screen …click here to read more

What To Look For In A Cheap Notebook Computer

The most important component to your notebook computer is the processor or CPU. There really are only two processors you should consider if you are purchasing a new notebook computer. The first is the Intel Core 2 Duo and the second is the Intel Core Duo. These chips are top of the line. But don’t worry, there are plenty of rigs utilizing these chips that still come in at well under $1000.

Don’t make the mistake of looking at short-term price alone. If you want to get a cheap notebook computer for $400 but you get one that is already utilizing old technology you will be buying another cheap notebook computer in a year or two. Whereas if you spend a little bit more and get a cheap notebook computer that will last you 3-4 years, you will end up saving several hundred dollars in the long run. What I’m saying is shop around to get a good deal on a quality computer. Don’t just buy the cheapest thing out there.

The second thing to look for is the memory or RAM. You need at least 512MB of ram …click here to read more

Low Cost Netbook Review - HP Mini 2140 - A Great Market Value For Sale

HP is really putting a lot of effort to be the no 1 low cost net book provider. Thanks to the currently booming net book market. At the recent CES in Las Vegas, HP unveiled their latest addition to the great net book arena.

Yes. HP announced that their latest HP Mini 2140 model will be made available very soon. Keeping true with their previous model, HP Mini 2133, the new 2140 is built on the same material as the 2133. That means the 2140 will also be built on a solid magnesium alloy chassis, as with the older 2133.

Cool. None of the flimsy plastic stuff. Personally, I like it better this way. With netbooks being small in size, they are more prone to physical abuse. This is especially true if you carry them around with you in your daily travels. As such, a more sturdy and strong build material is always a welcome improvement.

The only downside to the strong and sturdy build is its’ weight. It surely weights a lot more than the other net books built on them flimsy plastic material. The 2140 unit weighs about 3.0 pounds with full accessories. That makes it the heaviest netbook around. Oh well, you can’t win them all, I guess.

The HP Mini 2140 also sports probably the largest keyboard in the low cost net book range. At 92% of a standard keyboard, you would surely be able to adapt quickly to the keyboard. It even has a full sized right shift key located right below the enter key. Nothing awkward about the keyboard.

The keys are also protected with HP Durakeys. HP DuraKeys? Its a clear coating that protects the finish and printed characters on the keys. The keyboard will be look new even after years of heavy typing.

I do, however, have a beef with the mouse pad, though. Somehow, having the mouse buttons on either sides of the mouse pad really doesn’t jive with me. I would have liked it better if they had decided to put the mouse buttons at the bottom as with a normal mouse pad.

I’ve always been somewhat frustrated that these net books can only display to a max resolution if 1024×600. To those who like to have more pixels in their display, the HP Mini 2140 unit has got two display modes - 1024×576 and 1366×768. Odd resolutions? Yes. They are a bit odd. I think HP decided to make the display fit in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Why? To conform to HDTV standard perhaps?

Following are the hardware specifications for the HP Mini 2140:

CPU: Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.60 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB)

Chipset: Mobile Intel® 945GSE Express

Memory: 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (Max 2GB)

Hard Drive: 160GB 5400/7200 rpm SATA; 80GB Solid State Drive

Display: 10.1-inch diagonal HP Illumi-Lite LED SD; 10.1-inch diagonal Illumi-Lite LED HD

Graphics: Mobile Intel GMA950

Integrated Camera: VGA Camera

Ports: 2 USB 2.0; 1 mic in; 1 headphone/line-out; 1 VGA out; 1 RJ-45

Slots: 1 Express Card/54; 1 secure digital

Audio: High Definition Audio, stereo speakers

Networking: Marvell Ethernet Integrated Controller (10/100/1000)

Wireless: Broadcom 802.11a/b/g/draft-n; Broadcom 802.11b/g; HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth 2.0 Wireless Technology

Battery: 3-cell (28 WHr) high capacity Lithium-Ion; 6-cell (55 WHr) high capacity Lithium-Ion.

What else? That’s basically the gist of it. I’d say the main benefit of getting this new HP Mini 2140 would be the better screen resolution. No matter how odd the display resolution is, 1366×768 is certainly a lot better than just 1024×600 which is like the de facto standard for netbook screen resolution.

Nothing much separate the current netbooks from one another. For the most part, they are all created almost equal since they are mostly built on the same Intel Atom chipsets. This new HP Mini 2140 tries to differentiate itself from the rest by the means of the display resolution. So, if you want something different, this HP 2140 unit is certainly worth looking at.

Our top ten mini laptops list as of February 2009. This list compiles the best netbooks based upon cost, size, practicality and how useful they are. On a side note, we’ve also judged by looks as well in some cases.

Down the bottom is of our top ten mini laptops is…

#10 - Toshiba NB100

The first Toshiba mini laptop is a bog standard 9 inch mini laptop with a big Toshiba name stamped on it. It does have some nice features but overall, not much to fuss over. The looks are appalling, the lid and tray not matching up and the battery kicks out of the back. This is supposed to reverse the problems the Dell Mini 9 had, and not intrude on keyboard space. It has worked to an extent, but it’s a far from finished solution. You can buy much better for your money, but the NB100 is a Toshiba, so you’re buying expertise and brand as well.

Overall: 3 stars - previous ranking Decemeber 08: #7

#9 - MSI Wind …click here to read more

Finding High Quality Cheap Notebook Computers For Students

These days laptop or notebook computer prices are dropping so fast anyone can afford a good quality laptop. High school and college students will be especially pleased to discover just what kind of machine can be purchased even for those on the tightest budget.

Mainly because cheap notebook computers are cheap in name only, prices have fallen so sharply that high quality laptops can now be purchased at a much reduced rate. You simply get more computer bang for your buck.

There’s no real mystery to this price drop. Have you checked out TV prices recently, over time most electronic products drop in price as manufacturing costs are lowered and as the competition heats up.

In addition, new technology comes on stream very quickly, making perfectly good high quality laptops somewhat outdated but completely suitable for students. We are even on our 4th generation laptop technology with Intel’s Santa Rosa Centrino platform as featured with some of the newer HP Pavilion laptops.

Laptops are becoming more powerful, more mobile and a whole lot smaller. There are really no significant differences between a desktop computer and a laptop. The performance gap is narrowing as you’re reading this, even the lowest priced laptops are now capable of handling most computing chores and applications.

A good student laptop should be sturdy, portable and have some note-taking capacity. Long battery life should also be a consideration. Since the Internet is now an integrated part of every student’s life, connectability is another factor worth considering. Some student prefer a tablet form laptop for easy note-taking, although a combination tablet is usually more expensive than a regular laptop.

Where To Find Student Laptops?

There are many places to find good quality cheap notebook computers for students. Here are some places you might try:

eBay

One of the best places to find good quality affordable laptops is eBay, the popular online auction site. So check eBay for the type of laptop you’re looking for. If you’re not familiar with eBay, make sure you thoroughly check out the seller’s history and ratings before placing a bid.

Refurbished Laptops

Refurbished laptops are perfectly usable and shouldn’t be ruled out. You can get good refurbished laptops that will serve your needs nicely especially if your funds are limited. Look for special deals, a lot of the major manufacturers will offer refurbished laptops so check with these makers first. Don’t forget to check with Amazon, they also carry used and refurbished laptops.

Second-hand or Used Laptops

Check with family, neighbors and friends to see if anyone is selling a used laptop. Pass the word around your area that you’re in the market for a laptop; with laptop technology changing at a blistering pace many techno snobs are discarding perfectly good machines for a newer model. Just snap one up!

Dell Coupons

Don’t dismiss Dell. They make some of the best affordable laptops at a premium price. Remember, never buy a Dell without checking out the countless coupon sites on the web. You can usually get from $100-$500 off your new laptop by using Dell discount coupons and rebates. Making Dell one of your first stops for those on a tight budget.

Hewlett-Packard

You can now get a quality HP laptop for under $400. And even if you’re buying a higher priced HP laptop, HP is known to offer great bonuses like a printer, free shipping, higher RAM or hard-drive at no extra cost. Something you should consider as a way of stretching those student dollars.

Monthly Financing

Most major laptop sellers will also offer monthly financing so you can spread out the cost of a new laptop over time. If you buy online, check for free shipping and make it a point to check out the service record and customer ratings of your chosen online merchant.

Regardless of where you search for your student laptop, you should have a simple check-list in mind when buying your student notebook. Is there enough RAM to support your Operating System? Do you need a large hard-drive or storage space? What types of connections does the laptop have? Make sure your chosen laptop is sturdy and portable with good battery life. Make sure you take security measures to protect your laptop from theft by using locks, anti-theft software and biometric devices, laptop theft insurance is another option.

You should also remember in today’s tech depended world, a computer or laptop is almost a necessity for most students. A laptop is needed for note-taking, for research, for essay writing and even for communicating with mom and dad back home. Plus, owning a laptop will give any student an edge up on their fellow classmates. All good reasons why no student should be without a notebook computer.

What is the Difference Between Laptop and Netbook?

So what is the difference between laptop and netbook? A laptop (also called a notebook) is computer which has been designed to be made portable, featuring a screen hinged to a keyboard. A laptop includes a battery for portable power and a touchpad instead of a mouse for input.

Mini laptops (also called a netbook, subnotebook or ultraportables) take these ideas further still, creating a new market above handheld computers, smartphones and personal digital assistants. The primary characteristic of these are smaller size and weight, which are pretty similar to the average diary, as well as costing less than a standard laptop with prices starting at around £150, an excellent solution during the credit crunch!

Mini laptops aren’t as powerful as bigger notebook computers, and lack the power for big, demanding programs as well as an optical disc drive - so no CDs or DVDs. None the less, connectivity is a central focus for netbooks. Internet downloads are quickly catching up on hard media products, so perhaps it’s not such a loss.

In short, the difference between laptop and netbook is a netbook is smaller, lighter, cheaper (on the whole) and simpler.

New mini laptops are expected to sell in the region of 5.2 million units by the end of 2008, 8 million during 2009 and up to 50 million by 2012 - a ten fold growth. Industry analysts are torn whether or not subnotebooks will cannibalize the laptop market, some suggesting that a mere 10% market share will be taken. However, in this economic downturn, people will always look for cheaper products and with mini laptops available from £150-200, perhaps there is a big market after all.

So is it game over for the standard laptop and pc? Unlikely; whilst mini laptops can perform dozens of tasks to identical or similar standard of larger computers, they will (for the time being) be limited by battery size, processing power and storage space, the difference between laptop and netbook is pronounced enough not to make the former obsolete.

Furthermore, when using a computer over a prolonged period of time, it would make sense to use a bigger screen and a faster processor of a desktop replacement laptop or a PC, particularly for demanding programs’ such as games.

And finally, similarly priced but laptops, of varying quality, are available for around £200-300 leading some industry analysts to believe that the consumer focus will be on functionality and not merely size and weight.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, mobile phone manufacturers and providers are tapping into the netbook market with the Samsung NC10, LG X110 and Carphone Warehouse launching the Webbook - a branded laptop made by Elonex. Vodafone has linked arms with Dell with its Inspiron Mini 9, offering 3G mobile broadband contracts. Orange have followed suit with by cosying up with Asus and the Eee PC 901.

The difference between laptops and netbooks may seem very vague, but there is certainly space for both to function. If you’ve got a laptop, even reading this on one, lift it up. Feel the weight of it. Ask yourself, do I need all this extra space? Would I be better off with something smaller and lighter - if the answers yes, browse around the site.
